On November 3rd, one of the items you will be voting on is three seats on our Grosse Pointe School Board. Many of you have called and e-mailed me to ask who to vote for and to get information on the other issues on the November ballot. I hope this e-newsletter answers many of your questions.
Two of the seats are for four year terms and one of the spots is for a three year term. The candidates for the two fours year seats are Joan Dindoffer (an incumbent), Tom Jakubiec, George McMullen, Michelle Peabody and Anthony Ambrogio. The candidates for the three year seat are Cindy Pangborn and Karl Kratz.
Two of the things I feel is so important on any board is having Board members with diversity of opinion and having Board members who are willing to listen to other opinions, digest the information presented and make intelligent decisions for the good of the community and not just a particular special interest group. The last thing our School Board needs is three new Board members who all "go with the flow" and don't question everything we are doing now with the desire to do it better in the future.
With that in mind, here are my recommendations to you for the three School Board positions:
Joan Dindoffer
Joan is really a no brainer for one of the four year spots. Joan has served on the School Board since 1997. She has served in every office of the School Board and is the "historian" of sorts for the School Board. Her background on school related issues is an invaluable asset to the Board, as is her knowledge of curriculum issues. During my tenure on the Board, I would always turn to Joan for guidance on issues that had been brought up

prior to my joining the Board in 2004. With my departure from the Board, the longest serving member other than Joan has been on the Board for only four years.
In terms of formal education in school board governance and operation, with my departure from the Board, Joan was left as the only member of the School to receive any awards from the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) above the most basic level. Her formal education through MASB has served the Board well and would continue to be an asset should she be re-elected. This education will be especially important as our central office administrators reach retirement age (three out of four could retire tomorrow if they chose) and a national search is undertaken for their successors.
I could fill this whole newsletter with Joan's qualifications. If you'd like to read all of them and some of her history with the school system prior to her serving on the school board,

Joan's full time occupation is as an attorney with Comerica. She resides in the Park with her husband, Fred, and has three sons who followed the Defer-Pierce-Grosse Pointe South track through our schools. Her home phone number is 313-881-6750 and her e-mail address is

Tom JakubiecOne of the things that irks me about our annual school board elections is the sudden interest that new candidates have in the school system, showing up for Board meetings out of the blue, never saying anything, but just "being there", sometimes just so they can say they attended Board meetings at the League of Women Voters forum prior to the elections. This is NOT Tom Jakubiec. I first met Tom last year at one of the Board meetings where a heated discussion was taking placing about a residency issue. He went to the microphone and expressed serious reservations about the issue and reminded the Board that it is there to listen to and serve the community and not the other way around. When he said that, I said "HALLELUJAH" to myself--someone else gets the picture.

Since that time, Tom has attended just about every Board meeting and has never been afraid to let his opinion be known, whether it is on residency issues or making structural changes to how our school dollars are spent. He impresses me as an independent thinker who does his research, is willing to genuinely listen to other opinions with courtesy and respect, then calls it the way he sees it. I think Tom will be a good listener to the residents and will be an advocate for what is best for the ENTIRE community.
Residency enforcement and safety in and security of our school buildings are two concerns I share with Tom. I am confident he will make these priorities if he is elected to the School Board.
Tom is an industrial engineer who understands process control and cost control. I think his knowledge of analyzing work and production flows can help the School Board as the inevitable restructuring of how we educate our children due to State funding cuts takes place. If you'd like to read Tom's own thoughts on our school system, please

He and his wife, Billi, are Woods residents. Their two sons attend Ferry Elementary. Tom can be reached at 313-308-7020 or at
vote_for_tom@yahoo.com. Donations to help Tom with his campaign can be sent to: Tom Jakubiec for School Board Committee, 1361 Yorktown, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.
Cindy Pangborn
With 85% of our homeowners not having students in our schools, someone has to have a focus on the value of our schools to those residents---their property values. That's where Cindy Pangborn, a long time Grosse Pointe Realtor with Johnstone and Johnstone, comes in. After all, who is going to be more in tune with property values than one of our local realtors?

Cindy comes to the election with a lot more than just being a local realtor. She is a past School Board member, serving four years through 2000. Like me, she is maniacal about our Board meetings being run with respect for the residents attending in mind. During her prior term on he School Board, she instituted the filming of and televising of our School Board meetings. Cindy does her research on issues and is passionate about our schools and our community.
Cindy has gone "high tech" for her campaign and has set up a blog with more information on her views. Please take the time to visit it by
clicking here.
Cindy is a home grown Pointer, having graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1964. All of Cindy's children attended our schools. She lives in the Woods with her husband, Jim, and can be reached at
cindypangborn@gmail.comor at 313-885-9046. Donations to her campaign can be sent to: Committee to Elect Cindy Pangborn, 19976 Holiday Road, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.
What Can You Do to Help These Candidates?
If you're as concerned as I am about the direction in which our schools are headed, you need to help make sure these three candidates are elected to our School Board. You can help do this in these five ways:
1.
Put up a Lawn Sign. The single most effective advertising these candidates can do is in your hands. They need a sign up on your lawn. Let your neighbors know you support a diverse School Board. If you'd like their signs, you can e-mail them or call them directly using the information I provided above or just e-mail me with your address and I'll make sure you get their signs. If you want to stop by my house at 799 Lochmoor (on the corner of Wedgewood), signs are also available for pick-up next to my garage.
2.
Forward a Link to this Blog Article to a Friend. Please, forward this e-mail to a friend or, better yet, your entire e-mail list. Get the word out!
3.
Send a Small Donation. Running a School Board campaign isn't cheap. They all need your financial support by way of a small donation to help pay for signs and other advertising. A small donation of $10 helps cover the cost of three signs, so please help Joan, Tom and Cindy out as much as you can.
4.
Volunteer to Help at the Polls. There are a lot of people who come to the polls on election day without a clue as to the issues at hand or about the backgrounds of the candidates. Even if you have only an hour to spare on election day, all three of these candidates could use your help passing out flyers.
5.
Vote, Vote, Vote! If you don't vote, all of the above mean nothing. Your vote can be the deciding one, especially this year. Please take the time to vote, either in person or by absentee ballot.
Please question these candidates with your concerns, and let them know your thoughts. I know you will find them willing to listen to and learn from you.
In closing, I cannot tell you how important it is that these three candidates are ALL elected to our School Board. Our property values and the preparation our students have for the new global workplace depends on having independent thinking School Board members who are not locked into business as usual. I am confident that Joan, Tom and Cindy are up to the challenge, so please support them on November 3rd!
